Counting Down to the Olympic Crowds in London

Three hundred thousand people are expected to travel to the British capital for the Summer Olympic Games. The opening ceremonies are on July twenty-seventh. Wednesday marked the one-hundred-day point. Sebastian Coe — the British runner who won two Olympic gold medals — is chairman of the London 2012 organizing committee.
Blogger Sues Times of London Over Hacking

News Corp.’s NWSA -1.01% U.K. newspaper scandal widened yet again as a blogger sued the company’s Times of London newspaper for hacking into his email in 2009.
Lawyers for the blogger, Richard Horton, said he is seeking “aggravated and exemplary damages” in a lawsuit filed Wednesday at London’s High Court against the legal entity that publishes the Times of London, Times Newspapers Ltd.
IOC says London ready to welcome the world

London is fully prepared to welcome the world at this year’s summer Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Friday following the 10th and final visit of its inspection commission.
“We still have 119 days to go but I can tell you that London is ready to welcome the world,” IOC commission chairman Denis Oswald told a news conference in London. “Seven years ago in Singapore the London team presented a very strong Olympic and Paralympic bid.
West Ham make fresh bid for London stadium

West Ham United submitted a fresh bid on Friday to take over the Olympic Stadium as anchor tenants after the London Games, with three other parties also throwing their hats into the ring by the deadline.
The Championship (second tier) soccer club whose current 35,000-seat Upton Park stadium is near the Olympic Park in east London said on their website (www.whufc.com) that they were in the running. The Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) confirmed four bids had been received.
Olympics-Thorpe’s London hopes crushed

Ian Thorpe’s hopes of competing in a third Olympic Games lay in jeopardy on Friday after he crashed out of the 200 metres freestyle semi-finals at Australia’s swimming championships, leaving him “gutted” and casting a pall over the national trials.
Thorpe, whose rushed comeback bid after five years out of the pool has captivated the Australian public, charged out of the blocks but flagged dramatically in the final lap to finish sixth in his semi-final and 12th overall to miss the final. The five-times Olympic champion had earlier teased a thrilled crowd at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre by qualifying equal fifth fastest into the semi-finals after a solid swim in his morning heat.
London 2012 Olympics bill set to rise again

The bill for staging the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics is set to rise by nearly 20% to £11 billion ($17.2 billion) a UK government committee has warned.
The £9.3 billion ($14.5 billion) of public money set aside for funding the Games is “close to being used up” according to a report published Friday by the British Parliament’s public accounts committee.
Murdoch in London to quell internal strife

RUPERT Murdoch, in London to deal with one of the most serious threats to his empire, has announced the launch of a new British newspaper. The News Corporation chief executive yesterday held a series of crucial meetings with executives and staff on the latest crisis to threaten his global media group.
Mr Murdoch addressed staff at The Sun and other newspapers who are threatening legal action against their employer following the arrests of 10 Sun journalists based on information about their activities given to police by a high-level News Corporation committee. Mr Murdoch told Sun staff that a Sunday version of the newspaper would be started soon.
London finishes new Paralympics venue

Britain’s Paralympics Games organizers celebrated the 200 days-to-go milestone Friday by completing the only permanent Paralympics venue, Eton Manor. The venue, located in the northern end of London’s Olympic Park, will host the wheelchair tennis event, where 112 players will compete for six titles. The venue seats 10,500.
“Wheelchair tennis has proved to be one of our most popular tickets,” said Sebastian Coe, chair of the organizing committee. “The venue at Eton Manor will be a fantastic setting to showcase some truly world-class athletes.”
Caterpillar closes Electro-Motive plant in London

Plans in full force six months before London Olympics

As the organizers of the London 2012 Olympics were presented with the finished athletes’ village on Friday, exactly six months ahead of the games, they stressed that preparations for the Games remain on time and on budget.
The Summer Games are expected to attract 900,000 visitors to the United Kingdom’s capital in July and August. The festivities will kick off with an opening ceremony designed by famed film director Danny Boyle, who has a lot to live up to after the elaborate display that launched the last Summer Games in Beijing.
