British police officer arrested over phone hacking leaks

A British police officer suspected of leaking information about the police’s phone-hacking investigation to a newspaper had been arrested, the Metropolitan Police announced on Friday.
The 51-year-old officer was arrested at work on Thursday afternoon and has been bailed until September 29 when further inquiries will be started.
The Met’s Deputy Assistant Commissioner Sue Akers said the officer’s arrest was “hugely disappointing,” but did not disclose the name of the arrested officer.
London courts charge hundreds over riots

MP calls for calm after north london

Tottenham MP David Lammy says it is “important our community remains calm” after a man was shot dead during an operation by police. A friend of Mark Duggan told Channel 4 News there may be unrest.
Officers from Operation Trident – the unit dedicated to dealing with gun crime in the black community – stopped a mini-cab in Ferry Lane on Thursday to carry out the arrest on 29-year-old Mark Duggan.
London boroughs to dress up for the 2012 Games

LOCOG chair Seb Coe and Mayor Boris Johnson have reached out to the cities’ boroughs to spread the official colors and branding throughout the high streets, squares, parks and public spaces.
Today the Greater London Authority, GOE and LOCOG have sent London boroughs the official ‘Look Book’ from which they can now choose a range of London 2012 ‘Look’ materials.
Mayor Boris Johnson said, “When the world arrives next summer I want every corner of London to demonstrate its pride at hosting the world’s greatest sporting event. That means decorating not just our iconic landmarks and public spaces with the 2012 look, but ensuring every inch of the capital dazzles its visitors and the millions watching around the world.
Spirit of London 2012 comes to Bognor

The Regis School hosted their very own mini Olympics.
It was organised by the students of the Regis School Olympic Committee in line with their aim of promoting Olympic and Paralympic values.
With the help of PE teacher Gemma Barlow, the school was the first in West Sussex to become a “Get Set Network” school, making them an official link with the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
Other projects led by the committee have included fundraising and cross-curricular whole-school Olympic challenges.
Olympics-London 2012 yearahead package

Reuters will move a package of features, interviews, analyses and factboxes to mark the July 27 year-to-go until the opening of the 2012 London Olympics.
The package, which will be accompanied by pictures, graphics and television, will move at 0100 GMT on July 19, 20 and 21, with the masterslug OLYMPICS-LONDON.
It will include features on the Olympic Park area, how London’s transport system will cope with the visitor influx, enjoying the Games for free, the nations taking over parts of London for the Games, interviews with a participant from the 1948 London Games and with the 2012 Director of Sport, an analysis and factbox on doping test preparations and a timeline of key dates over the next year.
Dabur Group’s Ashok Burman dies in London

chairman-emeritus of the 125-year-old Dabur Group, died in London Saturday noon. He was 81.
According to family members, his body will be brought here for the last rites. His wife Sudha died two years ago and he is survived by his son Anand, who serves as the chairman of the group.
Born in Kolkata June 19, 1930, Burman joined Dabur in 1948 as a third generation member of the group and was named director two years later. In 1985, he became chairman — a post he relinquished in 1998.
Burman is credited with turning a family-owned enterprise, which started from the bylanes of Kolkata, into a professionally-run group. He ensured that his family’s representation on the group companies’ board was successively scaled down over the years.
Boy, 16, stabbed to death in south-east London

A 16-year-old boy has been stabbed to death in south-east London, Scotland Yard has said.
Police were called at 1700 BST to reports of a stabbing in Upper Wickham Lane, Welling.
The boy was taken to a south London hospital where he later died. Police believe they know his identity but his next of kin are yet to be informed.
A man has been arrested and remains in custody at a south London police station.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Officers attended and a 16-year-old boy was taken to a south London hospital where he died at 1810 BST.”
Russia’s Global Ports raises $500m in London listing

Global Ports has raised more than $500m after the Russian ports operator priced its London initial public offering at the bottom of its intended price range. The deal values the owner of container and oil product terminals in Russia’s Far East and Baltic region at $2.35bn.
The group sold a 25 per cent stake in the company at $15 per global depositary receipt, or the lower end of its $14.70 to $16.10 price range.
Ex-BP head’s new venture raises £1.35 bn

Former BP boss Tony Hayward’s new investment vehicle said on Friday it has raised £1.35 billion in a fundraising for a stock market flotation, higher than expected.
Vallares, which will focus on the oil and gas industry, has raised around 30 percent more than the £1 billion it had been aiming for when it launched the fundraising on June 9, a statement said.
