London Boards and Commissions
Audit Commission
Our responsibilities for overseeing and delivering local audit and inspections will stop, as will our research activities. Our audit work will move to the private sector. We are considering ways of transferring our existing in-house audit practice into the private sector.
Appointment of auditors
The Audit Commission currently appoints auditors to councils, NHS bodies (excluding NHS Foundation trusts), police authorities and other local public services in England. The auditors we appoint are employees of either the Audit Commission or one of the private audit firms.
We are working with government and other key stakeholders to help them to design and implement the new arrangements. In a paper sent to CLG we set out the issues that, in our view, need to be considered in developing the new framework for local public audit. It is based on an analysis of current statutory provisions and our practical experience of running the existing system.
